NEXT POINTSCORE MAY 27
SURFER OF THE MONTH & CLUB T-SHIRTS
With the May 27 Pointscore only 2 weeks away entries are coming in thick and fast. We've decided to ditch the universal 6 surfer heats that we trialled last month so most heats from now on will be 4 surfer with the occasional 5 ( except micro-groms which will stay at 6).
The 6 surfer format was trialled as a response to requests from various members to have more than 1 surf each month. With our big influx in members this year (currently we have 93 surfing members) we've had to run single round pointscores more times than we've wanted to but now we think we've got it sorted and we'll be able to have smaller heats and more than a single round in most divisions.
We've also been concerned that while some divisions have large numbers others are small resulting in surfing against the same people every month, a situation that doesn't suit everyone.
From this month, for instance, we'll be amalgamating our Prime and Senior Men's Divisions (which contains some keen competitors) so that they can surf against a greater variety of surfers and
surf more than 1 round. In spite of the amalgamation of these two divisions the surfers concerned will still accumulate points for their separate divisions in their overall pointscore for the year. This system has been operating within the Master's Division ( (which has 3 separate divisions within it) since the star of the year.
It will also be possible, where there is a vacancy, for surfers from other divisions to fill spot in a heats so they can gain more competition experience. This will be at the discretion of the Pointscore Director when the heats are drawn. In most cases your inclusion in other divisions on this basis will be for experience only.
Also once the heats have been drawn up it is very difficult and time consuming to make changes on the day. However, if any members have family, sporting or work commitments we will do our best to accommodate you. Just email us via the contact button prior to the closing date each month.
The May 6 Pointscore was a real blast and the fun wasn't only confined to what was happening in the water. We had a last minute change of venue which enabled us to use the best comp spot on the day. We used Facebook to broadcast the venue change and everyone pretty much got to The Shallows and we were able to start on time. While everyone is not into social networking Facebook is the best way to get a message out. So if you're one of the billion people on the planet who has a facebook account simply go to the Southbridge page and select "like" and if you're not ask the family member who is . That way you'll always be i touch
With our massive membership this year our priority, as organisers, is to ensure that our Pointscores start on time and everyone gets the chance to surf as much as possible so that at day's end EVERYBODY'S smiling.
So far in 2012 this has been the case at every POINTSCORE.
Nice work EVERYONE thanks for your co-operation.
SURFER OF THE MONTH & CLUB T-SHIRTS
Due to the club's change of sponsor to SHELLHARBOUR SURF & SKATE there has been a delay in announcing our Surfers of The Month this year.
The selectors have been doing their work at each pointscore and over the next 2 weeks we'll be announcing the recipients. Under our new sponsorship arrangement the prize for S.O.T.M. each month will be a $50 open voucher at SHELLHARBOUR SURF & SKATE. The award is not only given to those who surf the best, club participation is a major factor as well.
If you've checked out our facebook page you'll see that our first SHELLHARBOUR SURF & SKATE SURFER OF THE MONTH for 2012 is Brett Rogers.
Finger's crossed our 2012 Southbridge T-shirts may be ready by the end of the month. We ordered shirts last year which arrived at Easter Time on a slow boat from Indo but they had our previous sponsors logo on them. These shirts, which were by the way made entirely at our own expense, as has been the case for the past 3 years, will be altered and not wasted.
When our new sponsor, Mark O'Sullivan at SHELLHARBOUR SURFER & SKATE, was informed of our T-shirt dilemma his IMMEDIATE reaction was to offer to foot the bill for new shirts which have been ordered and with a bit of luck should be here around the time of the May Pointscore. Be sure to thank Mark for his support next time you're in there..

The reef shows itself as Troy Langendoen lines up a nice section photo Stephanie Thomas In what was probably the best decision made by any Southbridge committee member in a long time, Jason Gow's 7:00am call to make a shift to The Shallows on May 6 set the scene for one of the best Pointscores, surfwise, for a long time. Through the magic of social media we were able to get the message out to our evrergrowing legion of facebook followers, within a minute, enabling everyone to regroup for an 8 o'clock Read more

THE DAY SKOWIE AND I MET KELLY
Category: March 201230/03/2012 |
Skowie, putting all his limbs to use taking the Sandon drop, I first met Kelly at Thirroul Beach last December. The occasion was the Disabled Surfing Association's last Surf Day for 2011. When a buddy mentioned that the DSA were holding a Surf Day in the Illawarra last December, a spark ignited a fire deep inside me that told me to go along. I can't really say what it was. Perhaps simple curiosity or maybe it was atonement for past transgressions (... once a Catholic!). Whatever it Read more

WHEN THE CIRCUS CAME THROUGH TOWN Part 1

THEN..Thursday 11th March 1971
We knew it was them the second we saw the vehicles. There'd be rag-tag procession of assorted panel vans and kombis, all with roof racks angled at a fashionable 30 degree tilt (as was the trend) and stacked high with surfboards that would pass right by my high school's front fence which bordered the Princes Highway. The "pros" were on the move, taking their long, annual, lazy trek all the way down the coast that would eventually spit them out at Bells. They'd drive right by the school playground in the Read more
